Fraser Island & Hervey Bay Australia

Fraser Island and Hervey Bay Australia travel
Culture

Fraser Island, off Australia’s eastern Queensland coast, is the world's largest sand island, stretching over 120km. It's a camping fishing and ecotourism destination, with it's beaches perfect for surfcasting. It is also one of the best locatons to see Dingos in the wild. Hervey Bay on it's northern coast is widely known as a site for observing humpback whales. Whale-watching boats operate during the July to November migration season. It's also one of the best fishing destinations on Australia's East Coast.

Fishing

We fished off Fraser for Tailor and in Hervey Bay for trevally. Hervey Bay boasts a half dozens species of trevally that can be caught - many up to 10 to 15kgs in weight. If you're planning on fishing here get a hold of legend Andrew Chorley at www.herveybaysportfishing.com.au. You wont be dissappointed.

Whale Watching

There are a number of whale watching operators in Hervey Bay and the season is from mid-July through to November. The species that this place is renown for is the Humpback and expect to get real close to these amazing cetaceans during the season.

Where to Stay

The options are immense with plenty of airbnbs, motels, and of course you can camp on Fraser Island. There are also bungalows and cabins available on the island, but be sure to book in advance as this destination is hugely popular.

Must Do's

Fraser 4WD Tour - plenty of operators will guide you around or you can rent a 4WD, take the ferry over and do it yourself.

Whale Watching Hervey Bay - this would have to be the best place in Australia to get up close to Humpback Whales.

AWESOME WALKS

The walk of all walks here is the Fraser Island Great Walk - a long distance trail that is rated easy to moderate but there are dozens of other options. Combine a 4WD safari with some of the shorter walks to get a real sense of Fraser and its amazing wildlife.
